Pet Dehydration & Heatstroke

Pet Dehydration and Heatstroke Means a Trip to the Veterinarian

There's no denying that Texas summers are hot. However, even though you might be used to the weather, your pets can't adjust as easily. Pets are at higher risk of dehydration and heatstroke during the summer months. At Parkway Animal Hospital in Grand Prairie, TX, we see a lot of pets who are suffering from dehydration and/or heatstroke. Here are some tips to help you help keep your animals cool and comfortable during summertime.

Don't Leave Pets Outside for Long Periods of Time

Pets need to be outside for a variety of reasons, and you may have a standing policy of keeping pets outside to avoid constantly letting them in and out of the house. When summer comes, it's time to change that policy, especially if you don't monitor your pets throughout the day. Bring them in during the hottest part of the day and let them out when the sun is lower and temperatures are cooler.

Make sure that your pets have easy access to water whenever they're outside and keep water dishes topped off. It's also important to provide plenty of shelter with airflow so your pets can get out of the sun and enjoy a breeze.

Recognizing Signs of Dehydration and Heatstroke in Pets

Dehydration and heatstroke have different presentations, and familiarity with their signs helps you determine what's wrong with your pets and what steps to take next. Signs of dehydration include:

  • Lack of appetite
  • Dull or sunken eyes
  • Inelastic skin
  • Dry mouth with no saliva present

Both cats and dogs will exhibit similar signs of heatstroke or dehydration. When you notice these signs, call the veterinarian for immediate intervention.
